Here at Beyond 2020 Vision Specialists, we are proud to offer retinal evaluations to our patients. Your doctor may recommend a retinal evaluation if retinal abnormalities or tears are suspected, or if you are at a higher risk for developing retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, or glaucoma. These evaluations are usually conducted with, or in addition to your regular comprehensive eye examinations, and are completed using Optos digital retinal imaging.
Digital Retinal Imaging
Digital retinal imaging allows us to take pictures of the back of your eye to detect any potential problems or diseases. When you receive a retinal evaluation, we can keep your retinal image on file to examine and compare during future evaluations to track any changes over time. Digital retinal imaging is important to the detection and early treatment of various diseases that may or may not exhibit obvious symptoms and is the only way to diagnose ocular diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinal tears.
In addition to digital retinal imaging, your doctor may also conduct other retinal testing depending on your specific needs and condition. When testing is completed, your doctor will discuss the evaluation findings with you and any potential risks for a retinal disease you may have. If a problem affects your vision just a little, you may not even realize it’s a problem until it is too late. Maintaining regular retinal evaluations is key to maintaining healthy vision, as some diseases can progress without symptoms and cause blindness if left untreated. The sooner we are able to diagnose ocular diseases, the easier they will be to treat and the less likely it is that you will become blind.
