Florida Vision Test for Drivers 80 and Older: What to Know
Florida asks drivers 80 and older to pass a vision test each time they renew their license. It’s a simple safety check, and with the right glasses many drivers pass without trouble. Here’s what to know before your renewal.
What the state checks
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requires at least 20/70 in either eye or both eyes together, with or without glasses or contacts. If one eye is 20/200 or worse, the other eye must see 20/40 or better. The state also requires at least 130 degrees of horizontal field of vision.
Where you can take the test
You can take the vision test at a driver license office, or have it done by a licensed eye doctor or physician, who completes the Mature Driver Vision Test (HSMV 72119) form. Many drivers prefer seeing their eye doctor, because the visit also checks the health of their eyes.
Why a full eye exam helps
Vision changes later in life are common, and many are treatable:
- Cataracts can make vision dim, hazy or full of glare, especially at night.
- Glaucoma can slowly narrow side vision without symptoms.
- Macular degeneration can blur central vision.
- An updated prescription alone often makes a big difference.
Tips for renewal
- Bring your current glasses or contacts.
- Bring your renewal notice and any form you were given.
- If night driving has become harder, tell your eye doctor.

Questions from former patients

Yes. Florida drivers 80 and older must pass a vision test each time they renew their driver license.
Can my eye doctor do my Florida license vision test?
Yes. A licensed eye doctor or physician can complete the Mature Driver Vision Test (HSMV 72119) form, instead of you taking the test at a driver license office.
What if my vision has gotten worse?
Many causes, like an outdated prescription or cataracts, are treatable. A comprehensive eye exam finds the cause, and the doctor explains your options.
