How it works

  1. Walk in or book. Come to any of our offices inside Visionworks during open hours. Bring the form from the driver license office if you have it. If not, we'll print a fresh copy from the state's website.
  2. Comprehensive eye exam. We check how clearly you see with your best prescription and examine the health of your eyes.
  3. Visual field test. A quick, painless test of your side (peripheral) vision. Every one of our Visionworks offices has a visual field machine.
  4. Your form is completed. The doctor fills out and signs the form with your results, and you leave with it.
  5. Finish your renewal. Use the completed form to renew, following the instructions on your renewal notice or from the office that referred you.

What Florida checks

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) sets the vision standards for a driver license:

Sharpness of visionAt least 20/70 in either eye or both eyes together, with or without glasses or contacts. If one eye is 20/200 or worse, the other eye must see 20/40 or better.
Side visionAt least 130 degrees of uninterrupted horizontal field of vision. When it's needed, the state asks for a visual field chart with your form.

The state uses the Report of Eye Exam (HSMV 72010) when a driver doesn't meet the standards at the office or needs to send proof of vision, and the Mature Driver Vision Test (HSMV 72119) for drivers 80 and older at renewal. Rules and forms can change, so see the FLHSMV vision standards for the latest.

If you didn't pass the screening

Failing a quick screening doesn't always mean your vision is poor. Often you just need an updated prescription, which we find during your exam, and the Visionworks store in the same building can make your new glasses. If something else is affecting your vision, such as a cataract or another eye condition, the doctor will explain what we found and help you with next steps, including a referral to a surgeon when you need one.

What to bring

Common questions

Can an optometrist fill out my Florida driver license vision form?

Yes. The Report of Eye Exam (HSMV 72010) can be completed by an optometrist, and Florida law allows drivers 80 and older to have their renewal vision test done by a licensed optometrist or physician instead of at a driver license office. Our doctors are licensed Florida optometrists.

I failed the vision test at the DMV. What do I do?

Bring the form the driver license office gave you to any Beyond 2020 office inside Visionworks. If you don't have it, we can print it for you from the state's website. We do a comprehensive eye exam and a visual field test, the doctor fills out the form, and you leave with it, usually in about 30 minutes.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome every day our Visionworks offices are open. You can also book online or call ahead if you prefer a set time.

How much does it cost?

Call the office you plan to visit for the cost of the visual field test and form. Your comprehensive eye exam may be covered by your vision or medical insurance.

How long does it take?

About 30 minutes, and you leave with your completed form.

What if I don't pass?

Many people who fail a screening simply need an updated prescription, which we can find during your exam. If something else is affecting your vision, such as a cataract, the doctor will explain what we found and help you with next steps, including a referral if you need one.

Do I still have to go to the driver license office?

The completed form takes the place of the vision test at the driver license office. How you finish your renewal (online, by mail or in person) depends on your situation, so follow the instructions on your renewal notice or from the office that referred you.
