Complex Prescriptions & Prism Glasses

Complex Prescriptions & Prism Glasses

For prescriptions that need extra care.

Some prescriptions are harder than others: double vision that needs prism, very high powers, a big difference between the two eyes, irregular corneas after surgery, or progressives that never felt right. Dr. Tumolo has been refracting since 1999 and is a licensed optician as well as an optometrist, and he sees these patients personally at our Odessa and East Lake (Palm Harbor) offices.

How we approach it

  • Wavefront measurements. OPD-Scan III testing maps the eye’s optics, including higher-order aberrations that a standard refraction can’t correct, so we know what to expect from glasses.
  • A careful digital refraction on the Nidek RT-6100, adjusted to each patient rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
  • Trial frame testing so you see the new prescription in real life before we order.
  • Lens design matched to the prescription. Freeform, AI-designed single-vision and progressive lenses, with prism compensation when needed. Because we work with several labs, we can choose from all major lens brands.
  • Precise measurements by licensed opticians. For complex prescriptions, small measurement errors matter, so every fitting is done carefully.

Most single-vision glasses are made in our own Odessa lab. Complex and prism lenses are made by our partner labs.

Glasses made somewhere else not working?

We regularly see patients for a second opinion when new glasses don’t feel right. See second opinions on glasses.

Paying for your visit

We see patients with vision insurance, medical insurance and self-pay. Self-pay and out-of-network patients receive an itemized receipt to submit to their plan, and FSA and HSA cards are welcome. Call either office for self-pay details.

Common questions

What are prism glasses?

Prism lenses bend light so both eyes can line up on the same image. They’re used for double vision and for eye-teaming problems, and are carefully measured during the exam.

Can you help with glasses after LASIK or other corneal surgery?

Yes. After LASIK, PRK, corneal transplants or other corneal surgery, the eye’s optics can be irregular. We use wavefront testing and a careful refraction to find the clearest prescription glasses can give.

I have a very strong prescription. Can my glasses look and feel better?

Usually. Lens material, freeform design, frame size and precise measurements all affect how thick, heavy and clear high-prescription lenses are. Our licensed opticians fit each pair.

Who handles prism and complex prescriptions?
